Audiobook Review: Obsidian (New Species, #8). ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Obsidian by Laurann Dohner

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Dr. Allison Baker is obsessed with saving the comatose New Species male. She has tried everything and there’s only one option left. Alli will break every rule and put her life in danger by tempting 880 to wake, using only her feminine scent and touch. She just has to kidnap him and crawl into bed with him to make it work.

880 wakes in a different world with a small female who’s been sleeping beside him, caressing him and wrapping her sweet body around his, teasing his senses. He lies silent and still, listening and evaluating each arousing touch, fighting his body’s reaction. Hatred flares when he discovers she’s human, but Mercile stole everything from him so he decides it’s fair to take her in return.

But things quickly change and he wants her at his side and in his bed. 880 has chosen a new name—Obsidian—the personification of dark and dangerous. He’ll fight them all to keep Alli. No one will stand in his way.

The heroine: Dr. Allison Baker – she is working for the NSO medical staff and it is her job to take care of 880 who was rescued from a small contingent of Mercile employees who went off the rails after most of the New Species were rescued and the NSO was formed. Since he was found he has been in a coma and none of the Mercile drugs that usually work on New Species to speed healing have had any effect on him.

The Hero: Obsidian (a.k.a. 880) – He is New Species and while he was still with some Mercile employees, he had to watch his mate being tortured and killed in front of him to keep him in line. He lost all hope and didn’t want to live anymore. He is an alpha dominant male who has darkness in his soul because of all the abuse he suffered and what was done to his mate.

The Story: Alli believes that finding a new female will be the only thing that wakes 880 from his coma, and she intends to help him by doing everything she can. None of the other New Species recognized him so they don’t know what all was done to him other than the loss of his mate, and they don’t know what he will be like when and if he wakes. Alli decides that the best way to take care of him is to kidnap him and keep him exposed to only her. She lays next to him in bed and touches him whenever she can, washing and brushing his long hair.

This series reminds me a lot of the Breeds series by Lora Leigh as they are both about DNA experiments resulting in humans with animal DNA who were held by an evil corporation and treated extremely cruelly. In both series, they are rescued and end up living in a sort of free compound. I read most of that series and loved it and I am loving this one as well. I like that Laurann Dohner is great at building suspense within a story, there have been many times so far in this series that I have been on the edge of my seat.

This book is told in dual points of view via solo narration and was narrated by Vanessa Chambers. Vanessa’s voice is very pleasant and sonorous. She is terrific at doing different voices for different characters and there are a lot of characters in each of these books, so that can’t be an easy job, but she does it so well.
