Lorn by Laurann Dohner
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Being raised among a race of half-breed Vampires and Lycans has been far from easy for Kira. VampLycans despise humans – and her mother’s human blood runs deep in Kira’s veins. Unable to shift, having few VampLycan traits at all, Kira is denied acceptance from the clan, and the love of the man she’s wanted since childhood. A little girl’s crush that’s bloomed into a desire so strong, it threatens to consume her. Suffering the pain of Lorn someday finding a mate is not an option.
With their evil clan leader, Decker Filmore, currently on the run, it’s the perfect time for Kira to escape; to leave Alaska behind and attempt happiness elsewhere. Just one more day, and she’s gone for good.
Lorn has a difficult decision to make, one that will change not only his life, but the lives of everyone he knows. He’s been asked to take control of his clan. With Decker gone, the time for such a drastic power play is now. It’s a responsibility Lorn has never wanted – but the choice is made for him when Kira is unexpectedly attacked, changing her in a way that should mean her death. Now, he’ll do what it takes, kill whoever he has to, to keep her from being executed under clan law.
If he can defeat his enemies and gain leadership, Lorn will change all the rules for Kira – or die trying.
Childhood friends!

Narration Type: Solo Narration
The heroine: Kira – she is the product of a VampLycan father and a human mother. When her mother was murdered, her father took her and returned to his pack in Alaska. The pack leader, Decker Fillmore was a brutal man who sees Kira as not worthy since she is mostly human. Though now Decker is on the run from the other packs and the GarLycan leader.
The Hero: Lorn – his father is a first generation VampLycan and was Decker’s closest advisor. Though Lorn and his brother hated Decker and refused to become enforcers under Decker. Lorn is the strongest alpha in the pack though he was reluctant to become pack leader after Decker left because he would have to challenge and kill his father.
The Story: Kira and Lorn used to play together when they were kids. As they got older, she fell in love with him and when she was fifteen, he realized she was growing up, but then suddenly stopped talking to her and she never understood why. Her father told her that due to Deckers laws which strive to keep the bloodlines pure, she could never be with Lorn.
Though Lorn had wanted Kira, his father was determined that he eventually mate with a VampLycan female. Decker had been about to kill Kira when Lorn made a deal with his father that he would stay away from her in order to save her life. Even now, his father says that Decker will return, and his laws are still in place. His father has found a VampLycan female from another clan who will settle with Lorn, though they are not fated mates.
I liked both Lorn and Kira from the beginning. Kira was a strong female heroine despite being a weak, mostly human female. I like the story because it was different and unpredictable in parts. I usually don’t like the friends to lover’s trope, but this one was good since they had so much going against them. I also liked Lorn since the previous book when the other clans met with him to talk about him taking over as clan alpha. He had to think about it since he knew it might mean killing his father and that would devastate his mother.
These books have a lot of clan politics, which I’m usually not fond of, but I am liking this series. The world is complex, but it is different than in any other series. Like the first books in this series, this book is told in multiple points of view via solo narration and was narrated by Savannah Richards. After listening to the first few books in this series, I have really started to like Savannah Richards narration. She does a good job and does different voices for different male and female characters.
