Rules of Engagement by J.T. Geissinger

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Love is a battlefield for a quirky matchmaker and the cocky football star who hires her to find him a wife.

As the owner of Perfect Pairings matchmaking service, Maddie McRae earns her living helping others fall in love. Dubbed the Wedding Whisperer due to her success getting couples down the aisle, the sweet Southern belle knows that the foundation of wedded bliss is built on similarities: opposites might attract, but they don’t stay together.

Which is why she’s holding out for her own Prince Charming, a perfect gentleman she believes will arrive one day and sweep her off her feet with his devotion, kindness, and charm.

Enter Mason Spark.

Rude, arrogant, and notoriously allergic to monogamy, the hottest quarterback in the NFL is Maddie’s polar opposite. He’s also her new client. Her gorgeous, infuriating new client who’s paying her an outrageous sum of money to find him a wife. With his multi-million dollar contract on the line due to his behavior on and off the field, bad boy Mason is willing to pretend to settle down.

But when he starts to fall for the adorkable matchmaker who can’t stand him, the playboy finds himself in the game of his life to keep something he never thought he’d lose—his heart.

Narration Type: Duet Narration

The heroine: Maddie McRae – she runs a matchmaker service and has a long line of satisfied customers. She has put more people together that ended up walking down the aisle than anyone else in her line of business.

The Hero: Mason Spark – he is an NFL Quarterback who is having a great season. He is a player in every sense of the word. He seems to keep making the same mistake over and over, especially with cleat chasers. His license is suspended and if he gets into any more trouble, he can kiss his endorsement deals goodbye.

The Story: Mason’s agent Dick is forcing him to go to a matchmaker service in order to improve his image. Mason grew up poor, so his idea of success has everything to do with money, so losing his endorsement deals is out of the question. He doesn’t want to end up invisible or forgotten and Dick thinks he needs a woman (a nice girl) who can settle down with him. His entire future depends on him getting his act together.

After being signed up with Maddie’s service for two weeks, he is not satisfied, and Maddie is ready to fire him because he hasn’t got past the initial stage with any of the women she matched him with. He says they haven’t been right for him while they have ended up in tears after talking with him. Maddie ends up coaching Mason on how to treat a woman.

I found it hard to like Maddie in the beginning of this one. She was a bit too southern gentry and way too proper for my tastes. She was insulted when he cursed, made him go to church and more. She always wore pink because it was her favorite color, including pink lipstick, and I don’t know, I just wanted her to loosen up and be more real. Maddie also got offended when Mason said his dates always ended in the bedroom.

I loved Maddie’s auntie, who thinks Maddie is uptight and anal retentive. She was hilarious. She immediately sees that Maddie is sexually repressed and that Mason Spark is the man to help with that terrible situation. She also explains that Maddie used to be different until her parents died when she was sixteen.

This was told in multiple points of view via duet narration and was narrated by Sebastian York and Andi Arndt, both of whom are terrific narrators. I like both of these narrators, Sebastian has a deep, gravelly voice which is perfect for an NFL star. Andi has a clear, feminine voice which is very pleasant, and she does a great job. I also absolutely love the fact that J.T. Geissinger nearly always has her audiobooks done in duet narration, which is the best way to listen.
