Audiobook Review: Blood Lovers by J.A. Huss. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Blood Lovers by J.A. Huss

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Devil craves beauty. Even in himself.
The vampire will make magnificent promises and I will say yes.
The man I give my heart to will steal my soul.

Syrsee
My grandma gave me these words of wisdom just before she died.
Then she told me to run.
Because if the old witch is dying, then he needs a new one.
And that’s me.
This is my curse.
I am the vampire’s power.
I am the vampire’s strength.
I am the vampire’s food.
And he is very, very hungry.

Ryet
I hate him, but I crave him.
I want to be rid of him, but I also want him next to me.
I want to feed on him and sometimes I dream about him feeding on me.
It feels like a trick. Like abuse.
Like Stockholm syndrome.
But it’s not. It’s just… the blood.
I am the vampire’s scion.
I am the vampire’s slave.
I am the vampire’s future.
And he will never let me go.

Paul
I am the vampire.
Once you make a deal with me, it’s done.
There’s no going back.
Once I bite my lip—
Once I bare my teeth—
Once I let it drip—
He’s mine.
She’s mine.
And together we are blood lovers.

Blood Lovers

Original and unpredictable!

Narration Type: Duet Narration

The heroine: Syrsee – her grandmother, the “old witch”, is dying. Syrsee hasn’t seen or spoken to her in 10 years. Her grandmother left her at The Guild boarding school when Syrsee was 7 years old. She saved Syrsee that day, she is a black witch who should be dead, but she was able to go to school and college and is still alive because of her grandmother. Being a witch is in their black blood. The evil inside them can be powerful and can be stolen. Her Grandmother killed her mother after Syrsee was born in order to steal her magic.

The Heroes: Paul – Paul is a vampire who is awakening after a long sleep in the ground. He can’t wait for the old witch to die, so her magic dies and he can finally see the face of the witch he has been waiting for. He knows she will be beautiful, and he so does love beautiful things. Most of the vampire lore is nothing but ridiculous (sunlight, garlic, stakes, etc.), and they can only feed off the blood of a black witch. Paul is the only pure Vampire in North America. There are two others, but they have muddied bloodlines.

Ryet – he hates Paul, but he needs him. Paul found him when he in his late 20’s and was married with three children. Paul wanted him, and his family soon died in a fire. Paul made him an offer which he couldn’t refuse. He is now the scion, the minion of the vampire Paul. He feeds only off of Paul. He is in charge of tracking Syrsee and has been tracking her for centuries. He couldn’t find her when she was at The Guild, but now, with her grandmother dying, he is close to finding her and once her grandmother’s magic is gone, it is all but done.

The Story: Syrsee works for The Guild as the librarian. The Guild is an influential secret group that saves the world from evil. She has wanted to distance herself from evil and her family. The Guild had eradicated their entire line except her and her grandmother. Though now that her grandmother is dying, she felt she must see her again. She does, then she knows she must run because with her grandmother’s death comes the end of the protection spell her grandmother cast when she killed her mother.

Paul is the kind of cocky a-hole that comes from someone who has absolute power. He owns a mansion on a compound which is like a little town. It has tons of rooms, three swimming pools and a bunch of smaller houses surrounding it within the compound. He is the lord and master of It all. The two other vampires that he made live with him as do a bunch of half vampires that they created.

This was a weird one to say the least. Paul was quite a character, I see him a bit like Lucifer from the TV show, especially in the first season. He is completely selfish and all about what he wants and treats everyone like they are on Earth for nothing else but to serve him. And many of them are his actual slaves, so there’s that. He is extremely unlikable. Ryet is as likable as Paul is unlikable. He knows he is a slave to Paul’s blood, and he hates it and hates Paul because of it, but does whatever Paul wants because that is his lot in life.

This definitely wasn’t yours standard MMF romance, since Paul is such an odd character. He gets intimate with many different people and though he seems to love Ryet in a way, there definitely is no monogamy. The story was good and interesting. It certainly held my attention and got steamy in places, but it went to places I never could have predicted. I liked it though, because it was different and because it kept me guessing.

This book was told in multiple points of view via duet narration and was narrated by Ava Erickson, C.J. Mission and Finn Cassidy. Ava Erickson is one of my favorite female narrators, she has a soft, feminine voice which is very enjoyable to listen to. C.J. Mission and Finn Cassidy do a great job, but neither is one of my favorite male narrators. Though they did a fine job, and I am glad that different narrators were used for each of the main characters.
