Sunny Springs Secrets by Arlo Arrow
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Short but with a lot of guts
I really liked this story about Helena who is about to begin senior year at Sunny Springs High. Helena has worked hard for perfect grades and to be the lead journalist and editor of the school paper because she wants to get into Berkeley and eventually become the youngest journalist to win a Pulitzer. She rarely dates and isn’t a party girl but has a crush on Jay, the captain of the football team. She also has her own version of a bully, bad boy Daniel Bellemy, who has been following her around taking pictures of her, pulling her braid, and bothering her since she was ten years old.
Helena shows up to her best friends end of the summer bash only to find out that Daniel Bellemy will be ruining her perfect year by joining the school paper as the new staff photographer. The interactions between the two of them are pretty good. Helena is really crushing on Jay and he is interested in her also. The reader can easily see what is going on even though the characters can not always see so clearly. However I liked the way the book flowed. I liked that we could really see who the bully was in the book. The characters were developed well for the fact that it was a fairly short book.
“She stops speaking, but then says, “You’ll be hearing from my lawyer!” And then she hangs up. “That is so not as satisfying as slamming down the receiver of a landline.” She smiles at me.

I will definitely read more in this series and more from this author.
